Clarification on the Scholarly Dispute Between Shaykh Nizār al-ʿAbbās and Shaykh Abdullah Al-Bukhari on the Sudan Conflict
Shaykh Abū al-ʿAbbās Bilāl ibn ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Sālimī
In this section, we will address the issue involving Shaykh Nizār ibn Hāshim al-ʿAbbās and the war in Sudan, which began in 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces, representing the Sudanese government, and the rebel militia known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has continued from 2023 until the present. It is a war that has been referred to as the “War of Dignity,” a designation used by the ruler and leader of Sudan, General ʿAbd al-Fattāḥ al-Burhān.
The connection between this issue and the wider fitnah arose from a statement made by Dr. ʿAbdullāh al-Bukhārī in a tweet addressing the fitnah. The wording of the tweet included the statement: “Is there not among you a sensible man?” In the tweet, he addressed the situation in Sudan and the bloodshed taking place there.
The issue with the tweet, as raised by those who subsequently addressed it, was that firstly, it is an open criticism of the ruling and religious authorities, as it was addressed to them. Secondly, it is giving advice in public, and thirdly, it is undermining the legitimate jihād of the ruler against Khārijites and rebels.
Additionally, the post did not sufficiently distinguish between the party that was correct in the conflict and the transgressing party, namely the Rapid Support Forces. Rather, the wording was understood as presenting the matter in general terms as a dispute between two parties.
This became a point of discussion because, as is known from the principles of the Salaf, when rebellion against the ruler occurs, the ruler is to be supported against the rebels. Therefore, the need arose to clarify the reality of the Sudanese affair and to distinguish between the parties involved rather than treating the matter as merely a dispute between two opposing sides.
Shaykh Nizār subsequently addressed Dr. ʿAbdullāh al-Bukhārī, seeking clarification regarding the intended meaning of his statement and requesting that the matter be properly detailed so that the truth concerning the Sudanese fitnah could be made clear.
After continued inquiry and discussion regarding this issue, Shaykh Nizār eventually proceeded to publicly clarify what he regarded as the mistake in Dr. ʿAbdullāh al-Bukhārī’s statement and to clarify what he regarded as the correct position concerning the Sudanese fitnah.
This public clarification of Dr. ʿAbdullāh al-Bukhārī’s statement by Shaykh Nizār became one of the matters for which opposition was subsequently directed toward Shaykh Nizār.
